THE GIFT OF SLEEP - TOP TIPS TO CHOOSING THE BEST MATTRESS FOR YOU

So you might remember that last month I visited the new Silentnight Showroom in Bristol to take a look at their range and get some much needed tips for a better nights sleep.

Being mama to a toddler takes its toll on the old eye bags and currently I’m sporting some fetching suitcases. Our current mattress had surpassed the ten year mark and we’d started waking with shoulder and back aches. Knowing it was time to switch it up we headed down to Silentnight Bristol Cabot Circus Showroom to check out their mattresses and have a one on one consultation with a team member, all of which have had training from a sleep specialist.

Silent Night is one of those brands that has stood the test of time and is a well loved UK name in the sleep department, providing good sleep for 70 years. Do remember the hippo and duckling TV ads in the 80’s? so cute *and possibly showing my age* but it did mean I was in good hands.

While Romi literally climbed, bounced and treated the experience as her own personal soft play, I was excited to learn more about their range, it turns out there are a whole host of choices when it comes to choosing mattress, all with different structures and fillings, each creating various forms of support and breathability, plus prices vary hugely depending on your needs. Thankfully the in-house team have great in-depth knowledge and were happy to talk through all the ranges, while using the sample cut away mattress to show you how they work from a technical view point.

Did you know that the average person doesn’t even lie down to test the mattress before they buy even though they are going to sleep on EVERY night! As we spend a third of our life in bed finding ‘the one’ is so important. So here are some top tips on choosing the right mattress for you and improving your sleep:

1. When choosing a mattress take time to think about your sleeping habits, did you know your sleep position could effect what mattress you should buy? Do you sleep on your back, front or side? Turns out sleeping on your back is the best sleeping position for your spine but if you sleep on your side like me, there is more pressure on your shoulders and hips, so you should opt for a medium/soft mattress to allow you sink in and support the natural curve of your spine, rather than a firm one.

2. When choosing your mattress you shouldn’t be afraid to put your feet up! You’d be surprised at how many people take a quick bum bounce check before purchasing, and in some cases even not at all. The advised amount of time to lie on the mattress is more than five minutes in your preferred sleep position. This will allow you to experience whether the firmness and pressure is right for you.

3. Have a partner who likes to party while they sleep is no fun. tossing and turning is a sure fire way to keep your loved one from getting that all important shut eye. The best tip is to choose a mattress that provides motion isolation, this basically means movement on one side doesn’t effect the otherside. Foam mattresses tend to be the best at this but if you get hot at night you probably want to look at buying a pocket sprung mattress like the Silentnight Mirapocket mattresses.

4. If you’re looking for a little bit of added luxury, think sleeping on a cloud effect, then look no further than picking out a Pillow Top or Box Top mattress, all have an additional layer of padding built onto the top of the mattress for added comfort, while still offering support.

After rounding up Romi and testing out ALL the mattresses, I managed to take a seat with a coffee and run through our mattress needs, like a consultation of sorts.

I was especially taken by the new Eco Comfort Range that not only gives you a great nights sleep but is eco conscious and helps remove plastic from the ocean, that effectively means I’m helping the planet while I sleep. Especially as it uses 150 recycled bottles to create the fibre layer, preventing them from causing havoc to marine life and floating in our oceans

Thankfully Paul has very similar sleeping needs and quite frankly was happy for any mattress that didn’t dip in the middle, so we were very grateful to be gifted The Eco Comfort Breathe 2000, which arrived within a few weeks. Giving it a few hours to breathe I couldn’t wait to add fresh sheets and dive into bed. I’m thankful to report it is very comfortable and I’ve really noticed a reduction in how hot I get at night. Even Felix and Romi have made up excuses to hop into our bed so it’s definitely got their seal of approval, plus suddenly changing the sheets has become an exciting activity!

LET THERE BE LIGHT // INTERIOR INSPIRATION

I have this thing with windows. Yes I'm a Let there be light type of girl and the more the better. It's no wonder that the last few flats I rented were Georgian with huge sash windows, and the secret of it is I've been thoroughly spoilt. We've been looking on the property market for almost a year now and many a good size space has been give the no-go from me due to its tiny windows or dark shadowy rooms, enough to make Paul roll his eyes for sure.

So in the hopes of creating some wriggle room in my brain I've been trying to come up with alternative ways to let there be light in spaces that I might have previously dismissed, or at least share a bit of light interior inspiration to look back on if we ever actually buy anywhere!

CREATE YOUR OWN MICRO GARDEN

This week I've been lusting over the garden that we just don't have *sigh* and after our Parisian city break filled with slow mornings by our balcony lined with flower boxes, I'm certainly missing a space to sit and chill. So what do you do if you live in the city with no space? You create your own micro garden!

As we are in transition between renting and owning our own place and I wanted to make something that was flexible and easy to relocate, so when Farrow & Ball provided me with paint from their key colours for 2017 as part of the #CrateOutdoors campaign, I knew exactly what to do.

The joy of a micro garden is you can make it practically anywhere, against a wall, in a driveway or even the side access to your house or flat. All you need is somewhere to sit and place your magazine, books or drink onto. The key is to bring the inside outdoors using items that comfortably fit in both, I used this cute apple crate and painted in their signature colour – Hay, to make my seat.


Loading the crate with cute outdoor cushions, it can easily be kept in the hallway or bedroom and when you fancy sitting out just turn it upside down and use the cushions to get cosy. This teamed alongside a clean lined simple step stool that I painted All White, and you have the perfect spot.

I chose a few potted plants, mainly grasses or unusual mini ferns to get that easy to maintain garden vibe with a mix of cement planters, patterned ceramic planters and even used Farrow & Ball colours, Studio Green and Raddicho, to create small DIY pots that compliment the All White stool.

RADDICHO

Radicchio feels exuberant, romantic and sensual, rather than clean or graphic, due to its complex underlying blue tone. Perfect for adding pops of pink colour to your home.

HAY

Hay's quiet quality creates rooms that have a hushed atmosphere as well as an unmatched depth and gentleness. It is not a hot or sunny yellow - although it becomes more raw in bright light - but rather an aged, whimsical tone with an underlying green.

ALL WHITE

A pure white like this is devoid of both colour and association. All White has no pigment and creates an uncomplicated feel which is naturally fresh, but not stark or ‘brilliant’. The key to this look is to create a mood of stillness and calm by layering different whites, and only whites, together.

STUDIO GREEN

There is something almost defiant about the use of botanic Studio Green on walls instead of the ubiquitous charcoal darks. It is apologetically clubby and has a fantastically timeless old world quality, but can be used in the most modern of rooms. 

There you have it, a super easy micro garden that can be used as part of any flexible space.

WHAT MAKES A HAPPY HOME?

A few weeks back I was invited to Hillarys new showroom in Bristol to meet Architectural Interior Designer and TV presenter, Oliver Heath, and discuss the benefits of a Happy Home. As a lover of interiors, I’m always on the look out for inspiration and learning how to create the ideal space using different design principles so I was excited to hear to attend.

I’ve always had a passion for interiors and styling, I think it was the years of watching my mam collecting wallpaper samples and pouring through the pages of various magazines. I can clearly remember the various design periods, each punctuating a portion of my childhood into chapters. Now that I’m grown and trying to carve out my own space/style to call home, I realise that my eye for detail has sharpened and I’m focusing more on not only what looks good but also what makes me feel good.





So It was fascinating listening to Heath discuss his thirteen principles to create a happy, healthier home: Social (social space, private spaces, community), Sensory (Biophilia, colour, light, sleep, acoustics, air quality) Sensible (Warmth & Bills, Storage, Work spaces, Security).

IS THE TERRAZZO TREND DEAD?

The interior world is a funny place where style and design come together in a big mixing pot of consumerism and culture, all vying for attention. After reading my pal Sarah's post it got me thinking about current trends and how we are influenced everyday in a bid to create our dream home. I'm not one to jump on a bandwagon when it comes to trends, yes I can say I do like a botanical print but Pantone greenery? Yep that's not really my bag *soz Pantone no offence. For me an eclectic mix is one full of fun, design classics that have stood the test of time and the occasional must have item that you spot in your fave magazine.

As much as trends change and your tastes develop, home is a sanctuary that should reflect the best of you. So here's the big question here on my mind,  is the Terrazzo trend dead? Erm NO. Now some might argue that it hasn't been back on trend since it fell out of popularity in the 70's with it conjuring images of 50's style dinners and granny flats, but this beautiful durable solid flooring is a design classic and if it's good enough for 15th Century Venetians then it's good enough for me.

I love seeing this material pop up on Pinterest in the most beautiful hues and patterns as architects embrace the versatility of this timeless classic. For those not familiar with Terrazzo is traditionally made with small marble chips that have been poured into cement base, ground flat and coated with a sealer, but with the joys of modern technology you can now find slabs made with mother of pearl, metallic, marble, glass and all sorts of interesting materials making it totally swoon worthy!

I'm not really that fussed whether something is on trend, it's more about how I relate to the object. Is it interesting? Inspiring? Beautiful? Tactile? Durable? If I've invested time and money into it the chances are the answer is yes.

So here is a shout out to one of my fave materials, the humble Terrazzo. For me you'll always be on trend.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SPARE ROOM WITH THIS DIY WALL HANGING

I love entertaining at home, having friends and family come over to stay and enjoying the space I’ve created. Currently we rent a two bedroom flat and I always dream of having a spare bedroom for guests to stay over in comfort, but until then we tend to room swap, letting guests stay in our bedroom or using an air mattress in the lounge (not so ideal). However I wanted create a cosy corner that is beautiful, functional and welcomes our guests.

The other week I was invited down to London to spend a fab day with some lovely bloggers to take a peek into some colourful, quirkly and gorgeous homes as part of the the LivingEtc House Tours with ao.com I couldn't think of a better way to spend a Friday and I was excited to be inspired by some real life interiors as we hopefully buying our first flat  soon *squeal* and I need all the ideas I can get.. also I'm super nosey so this was a perfect day out for me and the first house was just swoon!

HOW TO PUT UP A SHELF WITH STYLE

I always love looking through Pinterest to get ideas and inspiration when it comes to interiors, although I must admit to shying away a little when it comes to making holes in walls for anything larger that a print, although I do remember picking up a masonry drill to fix curtain poles once but *ahem* we won't talk about that... Yep I'm much more into painting, decorating, creating accessories and styling than walking round with a tool belt, but I always love a challenge and rarely say no.

So when British Gypsum invited myself and two other interior bloggers, Sarah Akwisombe and Jen from Love Chic Living, to check out there new Gyproc Habito plasterboard and style up a shelfie for a shoot they were doing I knew it was going to be fun.

MY BEDROOM DESIGN BIG REVEAL WITH MAGNETIC PLASTER // PART THREE

It's been a long time coming but I can finally share my finished bedroom design big reveal with you and I am so excited to hear what you think! A little while back I was asked to design a space in our house using Thistle Magnetic Plaster from the British Gypsum's Rooms Made For You range and as our bedroom was a major dumping ground, I decided to create a dream space for us to enjoy. As you can see from the before pictures we hadn't done much to the room since we moved into our rented flat and it was generally filled with mix match furniture, stacks of stuff and general clutter.

MY BEDROOM DESIGN WITH MAGNETIC PLASTER // PART TWO

So you might remember from this post that we've been in the progress of doing a bedroom make over and installing some very exciting Thistle Magnetic Plaster from British Gypsum's Rooms Made For You range. After a few weeks of decluttering, ebaying, window shopping and a recovering kiddo, we've finally been able to get the plasterers in to apply the Thistle Magnetic Plaster *whoop*.

I rang around for a few quotes before deciding to go with a local tradesman D& J Plastering after they were recommended by a friend. What I hadn't been planning on was the crazy layers/years worth of paint on top of wallpaper! Eek. This meant that the walls had to be stripped first and taped before they could apply the plaster.



Thankfully it came off relatively easy and they got straight to work, priming the wall with this rather cool colour before mixing up the bags for the main event. The guys did a great job of sorting the wall out considering what a bad state it was in and they didn't even mind me snapping away over their shoulders.

The Thistle Magnetic Plaster is installed just the same as standard plaster, but to be in the safe side I sent they guys this information on it and the super handy video tutorial. They decided to do a 5mm coat rather than a 3mm as this apparently will make the magnetic power of he wall stronger, so I'm getting really excited about my final plans for the wall.


Rather than drying a typical powder pink this plaster goes on a dark grey colour and dries to a light grey, which is perfect for those of you who love the industrial look and are feel a little lazy when it comes to painting. However as I plan to go down the pale pink route and with me having no plaster knowledge at all, I'm glad they instructed me to use a part water white emulsion paint as a first coat once it's dried to seal the wall, before going full steam ahead with my colour.

I've had lots of fun sourcing bits and pieces – the Tiger store has been an amazing place to find bargains for the room – and I was thankful to talk to First4Magnets who were really helpful and giving advice on what type of magnets would work best on light fittings for the wall. They also make a great magnet selection pack with everything you need to get creative! I've been playing around with some of their strong magnets to attach some shelves to the wall *yay*.

So what have I been buying? One of the first things on my list was a Rubber Plant – I know right? Priorities ;) – I have been desperate to get one for a while and I knew that this would look great and give me the botanical vibe I was after.

I also received some large scale amazing prints c/o the fabulous online store Juniqe, here's a sneak peek at the large botanical leaf and palm spring skies prints. They are soooo cool I can't wait to show you when they're up on the wall.

We also decided to sell a few items of furniture in our room such as the: low side chest of drawers, tall chest of drawers, the random wooden box and washing basket, F's old ride on car and the even the Bed frame! We then used the money from to replace the furniture and keep in line with my bedroom makeover mood board, especially a new bed as ours was super old and in a bad state.

Now that the plaster is dry I've finally gotten down to finalising a colour to go up on the wall! I'm working with the wonderful Farrow & Ball and have fallen head over heels with Pink Ground, I can't wait to start painting, revamping some existing pieces and start styling the room. It's been so much fun and I can't wait to show you the results.

MY BEDROOM DESIGN WITH MAGNETIC PLASTER // PART ONE

You've probably read on more than one occasion, me sighing at the state of our bedroom. As soon as one corner is neatly displayed and totally instagram worthy, the rest immediately looks like a bomb has dropped due to it being our go-to dumping ground. But that is all going to change! Spring is in the air and the lovely people at British Gypsum have asked me to bare all *eek* and show you the reality of our space, so that I can design my bedroom using the Thistle Magnetic Plaster from the British Gypsum's Rooms Made For You range, and create the space I've always wanted. *Hurrah*

Using Magnetic Plaster in our bedroom make over is so exciting in terms of the flexibility it will create in the space, think movable prints, office mood boards, interesting lighting ideas, and oh my love of green babies hanging from wall planters *all the heart eyes*. After taking a little look at the British Gypsum's Inspiration Page and seeing how other people have used the wall to add shelves, create galleries and more, I was very keen to get started and begin my design.

As our bedroom is weirdly the largest room in the house, this certainly feels like a daunting task, but it's exactly the kick in the pants we needed to get on top of a space that is slowly growing out of control. For us the lack of storage plays a major part in things being stored/left lying around the room, creating a cluttered and chaotic space. So the first thing on the agenda is a good old fashioned spring clean.

OUR BEDROOM BEFORE

Ah the shame, it feels a little eek showing you the messy corners of our home, the ones that I like to hide away from the world, BUT I know it will feel good when I can compare these photos to the completed project and see the hard work pay off. So here goes, this is our room snapped just as it is.

The guy side, yep this is Paul's side of the bedroom and to be honest he is certainly the tidiest out of the two of us! So as you can see the wall has cracks where our current plaster is old and tired, the broken bottom drawer means we can't close the Ikea unit that is bursting with files and papers and desperately needs sorting through *a mega job in itself*, there's wires peeking from under the bed and a general dumping of mags and papers. Actually compared to my desk at the moment this is practically dreamy. 

So here is my own instalife verses real life, you can see here a small corner of the mantelpiece that I've styled, but in reality the mantle is full of random bits and pieces, the floor has F's bag of toys, a toy car that he has outgrown and a random vase that seems to have been left out *hand up to that one*. 

So here is the start of the mess, oh yes this is me and my small world of clutter. My clothes are spilling out of the drawers and they don't close properly, there are SO many prints stacked because I can't commit to hanging them as I change my mind so often *hello magnetic plaster wall*, an old bathroom wooden storage box full of baby clothes and general mess. Now on to the desk....

Oh how I dream of a minimalist desk space, functional, beautiful and pinterest worthy. Instead I have a huge desk perfectly situated to get all the light, but overflowing with stuff and taking up a lot of floor space. The one thing you can't see here is our rental curtains, they are brown and oh so ugly and I can't wait to replace them with something like this or this. 

INSPIRATION

Whenever I have to design or plan a space the first thing I do is envisage the final look and work backwards from there. So for me making a moodboard is a must, I've been pouring over Pinterest for ideas and trying to pull a look together that will work well in the space and feel like us. Here's what I came up with: a mix of pale colours, cool features prints, interesting wall lights, rubber plant and succulents, big mirrors and interesting magazine storage. What do you think of my bedroom design board?

DESIGN IDEA
So I've decided to use the Magnetic Plaster on the wall behind the bed in the hopes we can easily display some cool prints, which we change depending on our mood. My other idea is to create some statement lighting either side of the bed like this stunning home make over from Cup of Jo, the lights in this bedroom are amazing! In theory any metal light casing can be held in place with the magnetic strips onto the plaster, meaning no need for nails or screws! Genius.

GETTING STARTED

This is the bit that has probably been the most daunting, as the amount of sorting and clearing of our accumulated stuff is an epic task. So I thought I'd list all the bits and pieces we have to do before we can move onto the next step of installing the plaster. In no particular order we need to:

• Empty and sort through drawers on Paul's side of the bed.
• Dismantle Paul's bedside unit
• Donate unwanted prints.
• Sell wooden storage box.
• Vacuum pack F's baby clothes and store at my folks.
• Go through clothes, wardrobe and shoes and donate any unworn/unwanted items.
• Sell F's old toy car.
• Declutter desk and file papers.
• Order some colour samples for the wall
• Book the plasterer.

In term of colour and products I've been looking at pulling together some pieces from my favourite brands and I can't wait to share with you my progress in a few weeks time in the next blog post instalment. EASY DIY DECOR WITH FAUX FLOWERS // INTERIOR INSPIRATION

It's no secret that I've been struggling with the January blues, but I am shaking them off the and embracing the new by focusing on getting the flat ship shape and adding some much needed DIY touches. So I thought I'd share a few things I'm trying to make a home look good for less and I'm starting with faux flowers.

I love LOVE flowers, freshly cut blooms bring a huge smile to my face but a frown to my wallet, as I'm slightly addicted to filling the house with gorgeous stems, beautiful floral scents and can rarely pass the opportunity to pick up a bunch. That mixed with me sneaking in succulents sees me quickly running out of surface space and coffee funds!

So in an attempt to cut costs I thought I'd try using faux flowers from the new range at HomeSense. I was really surprised at the variety they had in store and how realistic they all looked! I was excited to see if I could create a display at home that would look good, brighten the home and best of all, last longer than a few weeks. I decided it might be fun to make a short vlog about using artificial flowers in the home and a few tips on making them look realistic.



My top tips are: Use a floral room spray to spritz your flowers and create a scent. Also be sure to choose flowers that feel as real as possible, the petals should have a waxy texture. I'm really pleased with how good they look and even though I might sneak a bunch in now and then, these blooms will certainly last.

A PERFECT SUNDAY MORNING // INTERIOR INSPIRATION

Those perfect Sunday mornings are few and far between, long gone are the days of endless lie-ins and indulgent hours spent day dreaming between the sheets, while sipping coffee and flicking through the pages of a good magazine. It’s crazy how you take such a simple act for granted. In those younger and seemingly naive years, I never saw an end to these simple pleasures, instead I whiled away the hours without much appreciation and then... BHAM! There is a small person who is not that up for me having an hour to wake up slowly on my own. Nope, it’s all about loud shouts demanding cornflakes and transformers, and any visions of sipping coffee in the comfort of my bed turns into the reality of avoiding lego, while blindly making my way bare foot through the obstacle course he’s created between me and the kettle. Thankfully he’s a cutie so it’s sweetens the deal :)

So when the lovely folks over at Loaf sent me a Lazy Linen Bundle, made of super-soft crushed Belgian linen, I jumped at the chance to indulge in a slow Sunday and enjoy a morning to myself wrapped in my luxuruious new bedding. I chose the dusty pink duvet and complimented it with a light grey sheet and pillowcase –  which start from £15 – and spruced up my king sized bed. The natural fibres are great, they keep you cool in summer and warm in winter and I love that you don't need to iron them as it's all about the natural crumpled look. That's a win win right there! Is it just me or is there something really satisfying about fresh new sheets or am I just showing my age?

So when this morning rolled round and the boys headed out into the rain, I bunked down with a freshly brewed cup of Arabica coffee, my favourite banana pancakes with maple syrup and one of my many ‘to read’ mags that lines my bedside table…oh pure bliss!

If you are a fan of pancakes but have any diary or gluten intolerance than these are the perfect snack and are super simple to make. All you need is: 1 Banana, 2 Eggs and some natural coconut oil.

To make:

• Mash up a banana in a bowl.
• Next whisk in two eggs until it looks like pancake batter.
• Add a teaspoon of coconut oil to a frying pan and heat.
• Pour a small golf ball sized dollop of pancake batter.
• Use a spatula to flip over and cook both sides and repeat.
• Serve with Canadian Maple syrup and enjoy!

I served it straight onto a wooden board to give that hotel feel and make my breakkie that little bit special and enjoyed eating it in bed, yep folks it's all about doing it for yourself. I even had time to catch up on a few of my favourite bloggers posts, write this post *insert shocked emoticon face here* and slip into the depths of pintrest for more bedroom interior inspiration.

Loaf's founder Charlie Marshall has kindly shared some bedroom styling tips to help you create your own sanctuary at home.

1)  Choose a natural bed linen - it's breathable and keeps you cool. Crushed Belgian linens work a treat as you don't have to spend hours ironing too!

2) Throw the windows open, draw your curtains or blinds right back and make the best of the natural light. A nice large mirror will help to keep the natural light bouncing around the room.

3) Flowers instantly lift a room! Spend a tenner on some freshly cut blooms and display them in old jam jars. Cheap as chips too!

4) Declutter the area around your bed and keep only the essentials on your bedside table for a calm sleep space.

I've also been watching the lovely Heather at Home vlogs and checking out her tips for decluttering, getting organised and coming up with fun interior ideas. I'm determined to make my space the perfect retreat that can enjoyed all day round, rather than snatching a moment here or there amongst the chaos. What would be your perfect Sunday morning?
