SUMMER IN SALCOMBE // 5 IRRESISTIBLE HOLIDAY TREATS

GUEST POST
summer in Salcombe holiday treats
Salcombe in beautiful South Devon is a hugely popular holiday location in the summer. Every year its winding sunlit streets fill with discerning holidaymakers, all making the most of the town’s boutique shops and renowned restaurants, sparkling waters and countless opportunities to revel in the great outdoors. Set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Salcombe’s pristine beaches, undulating hills and craggy coastline mean that its visitors are treated to a breathtaking range of scenery within just a few short steps of the town.

On a summer day in Salcombe you’ll brush shoulders with keen sailors, romantic couples, active families, passionate foodies, hikers and shopaholics, all of whom share a love of this timeless getaway on Devon’s southernmost tip.

To provide just a taste of what Salcombe has to offer, we’ve picked out five of our favourite things to do in the town.

1. Breakfast Salcombe-style!

Start your day with a short stroll to the Bake House in Fore Street to pick up some freshly baked bread and pastries to enjoy back at your holiday home, perhaps on your balcony or terrace which looks out over the beautiful Salcombe Estuary. Add some fruit and other fresh groceries from Cranch’s Pantry, also in Fore Street, for a luxurious al fresco breakfast – the perfect way to set yourselves up for a summer day in Salcombe.

2. Beaches for all.
Wander down to North Sands beach, taking in the unforgettable views of the Salcombe Estuary and out to sea as you go. This is a great walk for families as it finishes at the stunning beach, where the kids can run free, build sandcastles, go rockpooling and so much more. Dog-owners and their four-legged friends will be happy to know that North Sands welcomes dogs all year round.

The Winking Prawn at North Sands is a fantastic restaurant for lunch, serving scrumptious seafood and sandwiches amongst other delights. The ‘Fruits de Mer’ platter, featuring famous Salcombe crab, is a long-time favourite, and is perfect to share with your partner or friend. It’s not just for love-birds either – there’s a children’s fancy dress box and an extensive kids’ menu as well. You can sit outside and enjoy your meal whilst enjoying views of the beach, a holiday luxury not to be missed this summer in Salcombe.

3. Revel in some retail therapy.
Once you’ve enjoyed lunch and recharged your batteries, head back into Salcombe and have a look around the shops. During the summer in Salcombe, visitors can expect a wonderful atmosphere, particularly on Fore Street with its wide selection of boutique shops. You’re sure to find something irresistible for your wardrobe or mantelpiece. The kids will be happy too, as there is a toyshop where they can spend their holiday pocket-money.

4. Take to the waves
.
If you’re hearing the call of the Big Blue, you’ll be able to choose from a huge range of waterborne activities, including hiring your own vessel from Salcombe Boat Hire or taking one of the many boat trips on offer. These range from high-speed powerboat trips to gentle river cruises. Alternatively, take the tiny East Portlemouth Passenger Ferry over to the beautiful Mill Bay beach on the opposite side of the Estuary. Stroll along the sand with a delicious locally-made Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream – an unmissable local treat.
