A STAY IN THE CHARMING BOUTIQUE HOTEL PALAU SA FONT IN PALMA

Travelling as a family we always look for unique stays with thoughtful design features and staff that go out of their way to create a wonderful experience, and Palau Sa Font ticks all those boxes. This modest former 16th century palace has been transformed into a unique blend of clean lines and candy colour, adorned with eclectic art. Perfectly located a few minutes from both the waters edge and Passeig del Born, we wandered down the crumbling back streets, vibrant with small cafes spilling onto the streets and locals whiling away the hours, until the walls become so narrow that the buildings lean inwards like long lost lovers and washing lines stretch between the ancient wooden balconies perched above.

We walked through the heavy timbered doors into a small but perfectly formed reception, bathed in light from the atrium housing leafy greens and a small water feature set against the dusky pink plaster. Immediately I was struck by the beautiful exposed brick work and funky glass mosaic bar in the open plan breakfast room.

The staff gave us a warm welcome and F couldn't contain his excitement when he heard the words 'plunge pool' and 'rooftop terrace'. We were shown upstairs to our double room that included an additional bed for F, and opened the doors to our small balcony overlooking the street below. Here the design changes to embody an uncluttered Mediterranean style that is perhaps a little too minimalistic, only allowing for the necessities, however the rooms are clean and comfortable and what it lacks in luxury it makes up for with charm.

Ready to explore the city and its many wonderful playgrounds, cafes and promenades, we headed downstairs to the most delightful breakfast with a selection of cereals, cheeses, meats and fresh fruit. I had asked reception on arrival whether they had gluten free bread due to Paul's intolerance, only to find that a member of staff had gone out earlier that morning to a local bakery to buy some in case we had wanted it for breakfast. It's the small details that make you feel welcome and they loved chatting to F, giving him hugs as we left.

I stole away some me time on the rooftop terrace to soak up the morning light with my coffee in hand, drenched in sun the pale pink and mint colour scheme is beautiful and the small terrace is a perfect escape from the bustle of the city, plus it's open until late to enjoy. We dipped our toes in the plunge pool – although I did have to keep an eye on F as there is no depth markings or life ring by the water – and he happily splashed about and enjoyed taking in the views from the tower.

The hotel was certainly popular when we stayed there and I can see why as its location could not be better. This is a charming bolthole for couples and families with older children who want be in the in the heart of the city.

*We're grateful to have stayed as guests of the Palau Sa Font Hotel with i-escape with kids for purpose of this review. All words and opinion are 100% my own.
