On arrival we checked in to our stylish room made up of cool grey and turquoise hues with pops of yellow – plus the best bathroom tiles I've seen – and instantly began to unwind. I love how The Great House has encapsulated the calm boutique feel of a chic city pad with soft furnishings, cool artwork and design pieces, all in the heart of a village.
The kiddo, who is a huge fan of hotels – particularly hotel TV fun as he likes to call it – immediately jumped up to test our bed, while we made ourselves a cuppa and unpacked our things. Thankfully our room was very spacious allowing for a sofa bed to be turned down ready for a certain small person to hit the hay when the time came. As we arrived early we decided to get change and head downstairs to sample the delights the Coppa Club had to offer.
I've been hearing great things about the restaurant so I was excited to spend a night relaxing in front of a roaring fire, sampling the fine cuisine and some good old fashioned people watching... And what a Social hub it is! Dressed to impressed, people graced the bar with cocktails in hand while diners were seated amongst the cool leather leather and wooden tables, stylishly framed by the exposed brick walls and copper pendant lights to make you swoon.
I had already called ahead to let them know that Paul is Gluten intolerant and that F would be eating with us as well, and I was very impressed with the service provided by the staff, who came over prepared with the variety of menus needed. The menu was fab and I was overwhelmed by the choices but finally settled on a selection of small bites and the mouthwatering Fritto Misto, while Paul opted for the Flash Steak and Fries.
I loved the kids menu with a variety of options to suit the pickiest of eaters, and when F's carbonara arrived it has all the delicious attention of an adults dish but perfectly proportioned for a little one. We were treated to a bottle of bubbly to get us in the upcoming NYE mood and I'm pleased to say the service was impeccable through out.
Once we finished our meal we decided to have a coffee *ahem and wine* by the fire before heading up to unwind in our room, which was situated across from the restaurant. After we hid out in the bathroom so F could fall asleep *oh the glamour* we nestled down for the night, indulging in a little late night trash TV and chats.
Although the room was wonderful in every way my only niggle was the temperature, in renovating the rooms the insulation is so good that it got a little hot in the night, but if you like it super cosy then this shouldn't be a problem for you.
The next day a certain small person woke up super early with plenty of energy for the day and hurried us along to grab breakfast back at the Coppa Club. Daylight brought a different vibe to the space, turningthe rooms from buzzing by night to calm and serene by day, all with views over the garden, the River Thames and a small collection of moored boats. Guests and business folk alike sipped coffees and tucked into their breakfasts, hiding behind the mornings news.
The interior is a perfect balance of old meets new, as painted grey beams and panelled walls are complimented with cool lighting and a selection sumptuous leather and velvet sofas amongst other design details.
We sat in a booth and I immediately knew the dish for me: Smashed avocado on toast with poached eggs, chilli, lime and coriander *swoon* and a coffee to follow. F was treated to hearty plate of cinnamon French toast making for the happiest boy, while Paul decided on a green super juice for a healthy start to the day.
With a happy tummy we checked out and decided to explore the surrounding countryside, even making a quick visit to Paul's old university hall of residence. All in all it was a perfect mini break away and is definitely a destination for foodie lovers and celebrity spotters.

ReplyDeleteSonning is near Reading. The beds are really comfortable and bedrooms are well appointed, clean and fresh following the refurbishment. The food in Coppa Club is spot on for dinner and breakfast. I have been a couple of times so highly recommend as a change from some of the corporate hotels in the Reading area.
