FAMILY FITNESS

Skaterboy

A few months ago we were asked whether we'd like to be involved in a Family Fitness campaign with Argos and immediately I said yes. Since January I've made a huge effort to exercise and eat healthy in a bid to be the best version of myself and I was excited for Paul and F to get involved too – you can see my last fitness update here.

We were asked to wear fitness trackers and were allowed to choose equipment that would help us in our bid to get exercising. F was super excited and straight away asked if he could get a skateboard, something he's been wanting for a while, so when it arrived with neon knee pads he couldn't wait to get outside and try it out.

We got started with our fitness by choosing a load of outdoor toys from Argos and chose:
• A blue skateboard - like this one.
• Neon knee pads - find them here.
• Weighted skipping ropes like this one.
• A weighted hula hoop like this.
• A portable basket ball set like this one.
• A football set *insert Paul's excited face* like this one.
• Kung Fu sparring gloves like these ones to get us going.

Kids football trophy#Familyfitness skipping to get fit#familyfitness football with mummyI had to track the activity we were doing, while also tracking the amount of time spent active and our moods afterwards. I used my Fitbit Charge and F used the Misfit Flash which was clipped onto to his top, both of which tracks your activity, steps taken and quality of sleep. Once we had all the data we sent it over to Argos to be collated with the other bloggers results. I love using my fitness tracker and would definitely recommend investing in one as it really helps you be aware of your daily activity. 

Even though I tend to be quite active on my own, I certainly saw an increase in how much time we spent outdoor playing games, running around and generally goofing about. Plus I realised we don't tend to play games as a family that often so it was nice to get us all involved.

getting fit in the parkSkipping Family fitnessWe spent long afternoons in Ashton Court skateboarding, and on the Downs playing football and basket ball when the weather was good and I found that I had increased my walking, averaging around 20K steps a day compared to my normal 11K. The more exercise we did the better our sleep, well the better F slept which in turn meant a longer lie in/sleeping through the night. Hurrah!

Happy signOn the days that I was working from home I realised my mood was low and my sleep interrupted, which shows me how much I need exercise for my general well being. When I found out I was pregnant my energy levels plummeted and so did my activity and for nine weeks I was doing less exercise then I did before I started my whole get fit journey. Since the miscarriage however, I have struggled to get back into the swing of things so I'm using this post to kick start my journey again and hopefully shift the extra 6lbs I've gained during the pregnancy.

  1. This sounds like a fab campaign, we love to get outdoors with the kids... walking, running, bike riding, scooting etc Bugs really wants a skateboard so maybe I'll get him one for his birthday.

  13. I'm trying to get fit at the moment and my son loves walking so that's our main focus. Love all the equipment you got! I would love a Fitbit to see how I'm doing on a day-to-day basis. Sweet video x

  15. A skateboard, great choice! We haven't spent enough time outdoors lately, well we've been in the garden but I don't think that really counts as exercise with it being on the doorstep. x

  20. Wow, I'm really impressed with your activity levels - that's a great number of steps to be doing every day! I've just moved offices and have a bit of a longer walk twice a day. It's not much, but something at least!

  21. great campaign... it's so much easier now the weather is nice, we go to the park most evenings with bikes/scooters and go for lots of long hikes too

  24. Just got back from holiday and seen your post linked to #FitnessTuesday, which is fab. I am sorry to hear about your miscarriage, it must have been very hard for you and your family. Keeping fit is so vital for me, I just cannot imagine not doing my fitness challenges and they are usually what keep me going.
