DIY TWO TONE TOY STORAGE BASKETS

Laura Ashley DIY painting basketsDIY two tone painted Water hyacinth baskets from Laura Ashley

I'm not sure what your house is like since the avalanche of presents at Christmas but ours is starting to look a little crowded, what with having to share my floor space with Optimus Prime and Starscream  – yes we have reached the Transformers stage of childhood – so in a vague attempt to carry on project declutter, I've been getting my DIY on.

Woven storage baskets from Laura AshelyOur flat has beautiful Georgian features with sash windows, marble fireplaces and ornate ceiling roses but when it comes to storage space it seems to be lacking some what. On the hunt for something to contain F's plastic tat delightful toys, I found these lovely water Hyacinth baskets which would look great in our bedroom. I've been eager to try out the dip dye/two tone basket look for a while now, so when I was given some Laura Ashley Furniture Paint to try out, I quickly got to work.

First I masked off the area I wanted to paint, got my brushes at the ready,  cracked open my tin of Pale Sabel Furniture paint and got started.

Close up of water hyacinth weave on basketIt didn't take long at all to paint the bottom half of the small basket and F even joined in for a little bit before he got distracted by toys and wandered off. I then painted the lid of the large basket, making sure on both to paint in-between the weaves. I chose white to try and keep the baskets looking light and I didn't even need to use two coats, one was enough.

I really love how simple this DIY project is and now I have my very own two tone baskets so another ticked off my wish list.

I've now caught the DIY bug and my next project is to up-cycle a chest of drawers in F's room after sourcing some beautiful gold geometric handles. What's the one thing in your home you'd love to up-cycle?

  1. These look great!

I painted a chest of drawers a few months ago....it's addictive, since then I have done 2 chairs & a tall cabinet!! I am also planning to paint some drawers in my son's room....it's amazing how easy it is to do, even to a total decorating disaster person like me!!

  11. Good idea and they look great. I still have to find a home for all the Christmas toys and it was my 5yo's birthday at the start of January too so double the mess! I have a plan to upcycle a storage unit we were given, it's a really nice old piece but dark wood and is begging for a fresh, bright colour.

  14. How ingenious of you - the baskets look great. Don't worry, the plastic tat will decrease in bulk as the years go by and eventually it will all have gone!

  15. These look gorgeous. Some two-tone baskets for toy storage is on my list too, but I'm after circular ones and hadn't seen any... hadn't thought to make them myself though! I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for some baskets now. Thanks for sharing, you did a beautiful job. x

  17. Great idea, works well and I reckon the paint must help the baskets blend in a bit more, which is good when you can't always shove things away behind cupboards.

  18. These look brilliant! I am in need of something like this to hide away the equally gorgeous toys - although I'd need about 100 to contain it all!!
